Holidays in NYC – Ummm, Nope

Significantly late posting this – oops. This is probably appropriate for those planning a holiday trip to NYC this year…

Go to NYC for the holidays, they said. It’s magical this time of year, they said. IMO, it was more magical pre-COVID and unless you are up at the crack of dawn on a Tuesday morning, it’s terrifyingly jam packed with tourists and Vegas-like rickshaws. There, I said it. I might be alone in my thoughts here and I’m ok with it!  I was there for 8 days from a Friday to a Saturday, the first week in December – most experiences were fantastic, but there were a few I could have lived without.

First, on Saturday morning I made the GIANT mistake of heading south to Union Square for a Christmas market – typically one of my most favorite things to do this time of year. The market was so jammed with people, one could hardly move. No matter where I went, I could not escape the shoulder to shoulder crowds.  I couldn’t take it any more!

The subway can sometimes feel super crowded so I decided to walk back to Midtown (hotel location). Big Mistake – things did not improve – they just got worse! The sidewalks from Bryant Park all the way up to Central Park were so jammed with people and baby strollers, it was suffocating.  Weaving between yellow taxi’s and Uber drivers felt safer. The threat of crowd rush was real. My heart went out to all the claustrophobic, introverts out there.

There is a new unfortunate mode of transportation in town – the rickshaw. I had the privilege of seeing two different Broadway shows (Merrily we Roll Along and Appropriate). Both of them were absolutely fantastic. When both shows ended, I was feeling all the feels. Then, a dose of reality smacked me in the face. Just outside each theater, there were at least 5 rickshaws covered in lights blaring the most obnoxious (mostly bad) music to get your attention. It was irritating and circus-like. Made me forget where I was for a second.

Rant over!! I had to get all that off my chest!!! I cant lie, the first weekend in town was brutal and I vowed never to go back during the holidays, but NYC is still my favorite city in the world.

An eight-day trip for work, coupled with some BFF time was still super fun, but only after I learned how to navigate the situation by actually leaving Midtown and exploring other parts of the city, mainly Central Park, Greenwich Village and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I pretty much covered every inch of the city on foot and ran a half marathon to boot.

Thought I’d share a few snaps of my walk-about. The crowds during the week seemed more manageable, so if you have a strong desire to head to NYC during the holidays, plan accordingly.

As an added bonus, I did manage to find some great spots for a bite or a drink! Can’t wait to go back to these places another time.

  1. Buvette – Greenwich Village
  2. Cafe Cluny – Greenwich Village
  3. La Grande Boucherie – Midtown
  4. Kin Ramen – Midtown West
  5. Bakeri – Williamsburg
  6. Other Half Brewing – Williamsburg

If you choose to brave NYC during the holidays, I wish you all the best and hope you make the most of it!!

..i choose this…

Pam

  1. I love NYC and try to go each year to visit my niece, but never during the holidays. Now I won’t ever have to, thanks to your wonderful collection of photos. We have strategically planned this years visit to begin and end before the Radio City Christmas Spectacular even opens early November. Thanks for the lovely post!

    1. Oh Tracey, you are so smart! I do love the Radio City Spectacular too! It’s been a while since I have had the opportunity. I was pretty disappointed, because historically the earlier in December the better, but I am afraid that’s changed. Love your niece lives there, what a lucky lady she is and for you to have someone close to visit there. Hope all is well!

    1. Heyyyy! Thanks for stopping by! Darn! I’ll think about a different photo gallery style for next time. I didn’t even think about it. Thanks for wanting to take a closer look. This series came out quite nice! I hope all is well with you!.

  2. I will go anywhere, anytime – all you have to do is ask – but I have a real mental block about New York city. It is such a HUGE, intimidating city that I just can’t picture myself in it and enjoying it. Your wonderful photos do capture a different side of it though, so maybe I need to reconsider? Great to have you back again, Melx

    1. hey there! sooooo good to hear from you! I totally understand. I would recommend that if you EVER decide to experience the city, go with someone who knows the city. That way you can avoid a lot of crowds and focus on all the good stuff. Lyssy in the City would probably love to be a guide or even ME should you ever get the wild hair to visit! I definitely get into a photography groove when I am there, and it actually helps keep me centered. Unless I’m in a crowd with someone so close their ponytail is a centimeter from my nose. Then I can’t deal. haha. Can’t wait to see what you are up to these days!

    1. LOL, right? So many ups and downs in this post! the rickshaws….one of the most annoying things on the planet…I actually thought I was in Vegas for a minute. The theater doesn’t deserve this amount of cheese. lol. Yeah, avoid Christmas, you have MUCH better things to do. Can’t wait to catch up on your Guatemala posts. Getting back into this slow but sure!

  3. So great to read you again, Pam !

You ranting doesn’t even sound like ranting anyway since you’re doing it with so much irony too. Sorry though, to hear that moment was a bit oppressive.

But, as always, you end up back on your feet and good spirits and know how to enjoy the place anyway.

I always love your details shots, they are so gorgeous.

    thanks for sharing.

    enjoy the fun ! Xoxoxo

    1. Aww, thanks my sweet friend! I try not to bash anything, but man, this story had to be told. LOL. I have so many things to write about in the coming months. Feels good to be writing again. Thanks for always being a great cheerleader for me. HUGS!

  4. Totally agree about Union Square Market, I only go during the week for a picture or treat, same with Chelsea Market. Walking from Midtown up to the Plaza is also horrendous during this time. I usually meet Jon one night after work (he works near Grand Central) and we get in and out of Rockefeller and Saks for our pics. Luckily I have the luxury of tackling one decoration at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed by the crowds.

    1. What the heck??? I have been going there for years without incident. So disappointing. Glad you all live down South, makes your life so much better day to day during this time. You do have the awesome luxury of going during the quiet times and capturing all of your great photos! There is an IG I follow called girlintheyellowtaxi and also prettycitiesnewyork. They both make me think of you and all of your NYC posts. Cheers, friend!

  5. I love NYC but have never been in December. I’ve always thought it might be too cold for my liking and now I realise it may also be too crowded. I’m used to London at Christmas but this sounds even more frantic! However I thoroughly enjoyed your super gallery of photos from your visit 😃

    1. Hi!! You know, it was not that cold this past year. In fact, when I did my run, I over dressed and felt like I was going to have a heat stroke. haha. The unfortunate thing is that it is really pretty this time of year, but the crowds ruined the experience for sure. Glad you liked the gallery! I thought they turned out pretty well!

  6. I love NYC and will go any time of year! I have not seen the rickshaws, though, and am sure they would annoy me to death. The best part of being in the city is walking, walking, walking, so it’s a bummer that some of your walks were so jam-packed. I find the city very cozy during the holidays, but I have to admit it’s been many years since I went at that time, so I may take your advice and steer clear in December!

    1. Yeah, those rickshaws are a MENACE! I’ll send you a link to what the crowds were like….I was too freaked out to get my own video. Haha. Don’t ruin your great memory with this new experience. I’m hoping over time, places will stop being overrun, but maybe that’s here to stay. If you go, make your move on a Monday to Thursday and DON’T stay in Midtown. The only reason I did was for work. Also, the Christian Dior light wheel (for lack of a better term) was creating a HUGE stir this year, which could have added to the whole excitement. I still love NY and I totally agree, the best way to experience it is on foot!

  7. Ooof, I think the crowds would have done me in as well. I can’t handle it. I’m glad you were able to find some calmer places to visit, though! The photos are so pretty, I can definitely see why that’s a recommended time of year to visit NYC.

    1. Heyyy stranger! Yeah, it was pretty brutal with the crowds. I honestly had never seen it like that before. It used to be really magical during the holidays!! At one point a big truck turned the corner and pushed all of the people back onto the sidewalk that was full already. It was terrifying! I saw a few people breaking down – just wanted to give em a hug and whisk them out of the situation. UGH.

  8. I love that you spotted a Gillie and Marc work! they are so very good.

This balance between buzzy and too busy is a challenge for us too. While we love the magic of a big city vibe, particularly during the holiday season, the crowds do overwhelm. And given that you spend so much of your time in wide open spaces, the Big City is such a contrast.

I have always been a city girl but my favourite time of day to explore is still the early mornings when there is hardly anyone about.

    1. Gillie and Marc are so great! I think they have some new installations in the city.

You are right, after being in a smallish town where I ride my bike to get around, this was a sensory overload. I wonder if I would have felt that way before COVID?? Probably, it was that packed. UGH. Have a great day!!

      1. I think Covid might have intensified our inclinations. I know many folks who have returned to pre-Covid life, and just as many who have chosen to stay with the quieter.
