The First 30 Days in Bend, Oregon!

Posted by

How the heck did I ever become a homebody? International travel just isn’t at the forefront of my mind every hour of every day anymore. I have a 2 week solo trip planned to explore Southern Spain and part of me wants to cancel it, stay home and explore more of Oregon. Of course the trip is a go – business class tickets await, but this is the first time in my life, I have ever considered canceling an international trip.

The summer has had its ups and downs – saying goodbye to Colorado was rough on this old gal. Our home didn’t sell as fast as we thought it might and it was hard to say goodbye to 20+ year friendships. As difficult as it was to say goodbye, Sean and I both felt a lot of love and encouragement for the next chapter in our lives. By the time the end of July came around, we were ready for the move to the Pacific Northwest.

The first 30 days of living here in Oregon have exceeded EVERY expectation on the planet. It feels like home, the way Colorado used to when I first moved there 20+ years ago. We have done so much in such a short period of time. It helps being on a work sabbatical. Every day is a Friday in our household – it’s been incredible. Sometimes the gratitude of our new life overwhelms me – how can we be this fortunate? I miss the crap out of my friends – but I will see them soon enough – either in Colorado or here in Bend, OR.

So what have we done? For everyone’s sanity, I’ll keep it brief and show our experiences through pictures. I haven’t captured all of it, but you’ll get the jest of it. In short, we’ve hiked and run some pretty epic trails, listened to lots of live music (it’s everywhere), SUP’d on crystal clear lakes and rivers, cruised some smooth, swoopy mountain biking trails (actually not terrifying), road tripped to the incredible Oregon wine country, golfed on some sweet, carpet-like courses, searched for starfish on the beach at low tide, discovered all of the off-leash dog parks for our fur babies, camped in some pretty cool forests, watched the amazing skills of kite surfers, enjoyed the magnificent sunsets of central Oregon, and chilled on our patio with an Oregon rose’ and a cribbage board. Phew. Its’s been a blast. What I love most is we have barely scratched the surface. We’ll see what the fall and winter bring!!

Hope you all enjoy the Oregon sights!

    1. Dont you know it!! There is, however, a huge fire burning about 30 miles from us. Socking us in with smoke – I think this is a yearly occurrence these days – sadly. It’ll dissipate soon and we’ll be back at it. Thanks for the support – always!!

    1. Ha! We are pretty industrious – we got unpacked and organized within the first week – in between adventures! Everything is close so it’s easy to do a bunch of things in a single day. Hope all is well with ya. Thanks for the comment – as usual!!!

  1. A fabulous post with some absolutely gorgeous pictures. You make me want to come to Oregon on the very next flight, but like you, I’ve become a homebird. For various reasons, I have a heavy heart at the moment, but I’ve always had the same attitude as you in life. Grasp what you can while you can and enjoy it. I hope that doesn’t sound too patronising, but it’ll be great if you can post some more posts on Oregon so that I can visit a part of the world that won’t be within my reach anymore 😊

      1. Thanks for your kind words and I’m sorry if they unintentionally put a damper on your upbeat post. I’ve always been a glass half full person and so I’m looking forward to more gems from Oregon 😊

  2. With so much to explore in your backyard, it’s no wonder you aren’t ready to travel abroad. Next week, we have our first get away planned in a year and I find myself wanting to cancel. Never expected that. Enjoy your trip and glad your new home is working out perfectly.

    1. Ingrid! I hope you all doing alright and that you have fully settled into your new ‘sedentary’ life. I need to catch up on blogs soon – yours is at the top of the list. As mentioned, I have NEVER wanted to cancel a trip before. Truth be told, I’m a little nervous – I m out of practice navigating airports and such! The plan is to pack light so I’m not navigating a bunch of luggage. Enjoy your trip!

      1. We just returned from a get away to Sedona and Flagstaff. Up until the last minute, I kept thinking about canceling the trip, but in the end, I’m so glad I didn’t. We had a great time and will head back up to the high country in October. I know you’ll have a great time on your trip.

    1. Thanks Allen! It is a pretty special place – minus the Giant fire burning about 30 miles away. Keeping us indoors until it can get under control. We will be back out exploring soon enough. I appreciate your visit and comment!

    1. Ha! yes, I am sort of obsessed. BUT, not working has been really nice. Plus, everything is so close, you can do multiple things in a day without being exhausted. It’s great. I’ll get caught up on blogs soon (I hope), can’t wait to see the deets of all of your adventures. Cheers!

  4. Although we miss you here in CO, we are so happy for you and your new life! And … 30 DAYS?! It seems like you’ve covered enough territory for 30 weeks! (A work hiatus would do wonders for our activity, too, I’m sure!) Can’t wait to see your new surroundings in person … so soon! YAY 🙂

  6. You’ve done all that in 30 days?! No wonder you’re tempted to stay home and do more 🙂 I love the sunsets and those amazing landscape views, and can see why you’re loving Oregon so much – it seems perfect for you. But you know you’ll enjoy Spain once you get there and will appreciate home even more when you return. It will all be waiting for you, after all!

          1. No, I tend to post after the event! We’re off to Sofia for a weekend later this month – a trip we should have taken in June but I got Covid two days before 😦 Luckily we were able to reschedule. Then a much bigger trip to Nepal at the end of October 😃😃

  7. As a born and bred Pacific Northwesterner, in my humble opinion, you have found one of the most beautiful places on the planet to call home. Seeing your photos actually brought tears to my eyes; I guess I didn’t realize how much I miss it. I’m enjoying France, but the PNW will always be home.

    1. Awww, nothing like being a little homesick. I tear up every now and then about Colorado, but thats natural I suppose. I’ll get caught up on blog posts some day. Would love to read about your adventures in France. I agree, this part of the states is off the charts. Fire season is a little unsettling, but thats part of the deal. Thanks for reading!

  8. No wonder you love Oregon. These pictures are proof positive of the beauty in the far West, as I call it. And I’m glad you’ve settled in but kept moving. Best wishes for exploring somewhere every week. There’s a lot to see in States, but I love those international trips as well. Stay safe!

    1. I think it may take a year or so before we truly feel connected here with people, etc. I have a tendency to want everything to happen right now. Just not reality. We are definitely loving all of the things to do though – every day brings something new and wonderful.

  9. How awesome, it all looks wonderful, enjoy your change. We moved from a hills town where we’d lived for 30 years to a beach area that we’d holidayed at for most of those years too. That was three years ago and we haven’t regretted a single day. When it’s right, it’s right!
We are in the same state mind you and only an hour away from old friends, but making new ones is terrific too.
