Planning Our First Oregon Road Trip

Posted by

Yesterday was an all around awesome day. I went on a great hike with some friends, caught up with one of my favorite people in the world, and planned our first Oregon road trip! Our goal is to be settled into our new digs by the end of July. This means August is a perfect time to get acquainted with our new home state.

So what are we going to do for roughly 2 glorious weeks?? It looks something like this!

Leg #A: The first stop is Hood River, actually a small town called White Salmon, just across the Columbia River in Washington State. ‘They’ call it a town with “All of the outdoorsy flavor, none of the crowds”. Hood River and White Salmon are located in the Columbia River Gorge. This part of the Pacific Northwest is STUNNING. I can’t wait to explore this area. We’ll be enjoying the views of Mount Hood, searching for waterfalls in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, mountain biking around the Coyote Wall, and driving through the Gorge! The Columbia River Gorge is considered part of Oregon’s “7 Wonders.”

Leg #B: I am obsessed with the band, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats – they are playing in Troutdale outside of Portland at an outdoor venue called McMenamins Edgefield Amphitheater. We are suckers for outdoor music venues surrounded by trees! There is a wonderful hotel on property of the Amphitheater but of course it was booked, so I found a glamping dome on a farm about 10 minutes away. BTW, airbnb was a great resource when planning this trip.

We MUST also stop at the Multnomah Falls assuming we can get the required timed reservation ticket. These falls are the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million visitors a year.

Leg #C: Silver Falls State Park

Where do I start with this one? People call it the “crown jewel” of the Oregon State Parks system. The images below are from the Trail of 10 Falls which is a 7.2 mile loop that takes you by 10 waterfalls through a dense, lush forest. There are also mountain biking opportunities here that we’ll take advantage of. The plan right now is to camp in this area, but we’ll see – we are winging that part.

Leg #D: Many of my Bend friends absolutely love Yachats (Ya-hots) so I scoured airbnb and we’ll be staying in a tiny cottage on the beach so the pups can get some good walks along the shore. A few highlights here include hiking Amanda’s Trail, Cape Perpetua viewpoint, Thors Well and of course, the town of Yachats itself. Just maybe we’ll be granted an infamous sunset or two ❤️.

I’m CONFIDENT this post barely scratches the surface of what we will find on this adventure, but I think it serves as a good starting roadmap.

The beauty of this whole trip is that we’ll be on sabbatical so if we choose to extend our time on the road, we can. We can do whatever the hell we want!!

…i choose this…

  1. You are in for a great adventure. Make sure you visit some of the great breweries in both Hood River and across the river in White Salmon and the Yachats Brewery is one of our favorites in the Coast. Cheers

  2. I love planning a road trip! We did one in Oregon many many years ago, which covered a bit of the same ground as yours. Driving between Bend and Hood River we chose the route through the reservation which took us close to Mount Hood – stunning scenery if I remember correctly. We also did more of the coast than you’re doing, and really liked Yachats 🙂

      1. We have one short European city break booked for very soon and are planning probably two more. Our next big trip will be in the autumn, to Nepal (fingers crossed as they have to be these days!)

    I loved Multnomah falls 🤩🤩🤩
Fell in love with Portland, of course !
And was stunned at Cannon Beach scenery.
I only spent 3 days in Oregon, couchsurfing with a wonderful family (who have moved away unfortunately, otherwise I would have hooked you up for a meeting !), but I was so much fun ! I hope I can come over some day and discover more with you now that you’ll live there !
    Enjoy ! Xoxoxo

    1. Portland is great! I know they are facing the same challenges as Denver with homelessness, etc. but hopefully that will sort itself out in the coming years. Would love to have you come over and if you do the PCT, I can do part of it with you 🙂

    1. Thanks for the words of encouragement! I spend a chunk of my days lately looking at all of the different options in Oregon. So many – and diverse! Looking forward to sharing as we move along there. We will be fully relocated to Bend in July (barring any unforeseen events – lol). Cheers to adventures in France!

  4. I just saw that somewhere in Oregon they had this amazing Tulips Festival! The pictures reminded me of Holland!
I still need Oregon as one of my last few states to say I did all 50! I am going to be watching for all your pictures.
    How fun for you! Enjoy!

  5. You are hitting some great spots! As mentioned before we lived in Portland for 6 years and loved Oregon. Bend is so much more sunnier. Silver falls is amazing! Although in Washington when you can add the Long Beach Kite Festivale to your list: https://kitefestival.com/washington-state-international-kite-festival/ also do not miss Olympic National Park, one of the least visited parks in the US and so pristine: https://www.nps.gov/olym/index.htm Lake Quinault is awesome https://www.olympicnationalparks.com/special-offers/specials-packages/lake-quinault-lodge/lake-quinault-vip-offer/. Especially for the pups. We would rent an RV every year and do a dogcation. The Pacific Northwest is a gem! Enjoy!

  6. Back in my 20s when I lived in New Mexico, one of my buddies and I traveled around rock climbing and bouldering. Bend was on or list, but life and all we never made it there. I just watched Nathaniel Rateliff’s Red Rock performance on YouTube a few weeks ago. I think you are in for an amazing show. Be safe, can’t wait to hear more about this fantastic adventure.

    1. Ahh yes, climbing in Smith Rock State Park is epic. NR concerts are so much fun and he doesn’t price gouge. He’s at his best when he’s in Colorado. Thanks for sharing my excitement about this adventure!

  7. Sounds like you have an amazing road trip planned. I live in Northern California (Fair Oaks/Sacramento) and Moxie visited Southern California for a 70th bday celebration for my brother. I hope that soon we can take a dog vacation. Looking forward to photos of Oregon. It is on my go to list.
