Solo Time, a Dirt Moustache and Filthy Ankles

SO, I have this thing. This thing where I CRAVE alone time. I need it, I have to have it. The past 6 months have been wonderful – to be home with my boys. However, I am a true introvert through and through. People suck the life out of me. I don’t mean that in a bad way, but talking ALL day and night, wears the hell out of me. I can feel my nerves fraying, and patience flying out the door.

Besides, I just need a minute to not make my bed, spread my 50,000 toiletries all over the bathroom, watch whatever I want on Netflix and blast Adele in the car, guilt free.

With all these self-absorbed ideas in mind, I hopped on the computer and started researching…trying to stay in line with as much social distancing as possible and avoid I-70. I found this random little town called Lake George, Colorado – about 40 miles West of Colorado Springs. There are 4 things in Lake George: A general store, fly fishing shop, a hairdresser of all things, and a coffee shop. Oh, and a church. The other thing they have are ‘luxury’ cabins. If you blink, you may just drive right through town.

The inside of the cabins are really sweet – rustic chic – the owners did a really nice job of upgrading them – I’d say a heated toilet seat is a luxury item in a town the size of Lake George. The only downside is that they are on a busy road….so, here I sit on a super cute paved patio drafting a blog post, with the roar of big trucks in the background. That’s ok, sitting on the grounds of the hotel is not the objective, I’m here to get out and get my ankles dirty.

This morning, I peeled myself out of bed and took a 4 wheel drive road, to where I wasn’t sure. The road got so bumpy, I hopped on my mountain bike and started exploring. Next thing I knew, I was on a smooth dirt road heading up into 11 Mile Canyon with the South Platte river leading the way. Apparently this place is a mecca for fly-fishing – it was GORGEOUS.

Fishermen and women were all over the place (perfectly spaced), but it felt remote and peaceful. I still felt like I was doing something special and adventurous. Sure, there were big pickup trucks passing me by, kicking up dust, but I didn’t care. It was just me doing what I love best – exploring places never seen before. What is it about being close to water too? Water and mountains bring the stress levels down to nearly nothing.

After a few hours of riding and on my way back to the Subie (my car), some 30 somethings stopped me to ask where the river was. Moments later, I wiped my slick upper lip with the neck of my t-shirt and off came a thick layer of dirt. Bugs and dirt were probably lodged in a few teeth too.

I say we should all strive for a dirt moustache and filthy ankles when exploring outdoors. Mission accomplished! (I went on a long hike too).

Tomorrow, I may find a place to paddleboard, or not, maybe I will stop at one of my all-time favorite hotels and get a facial.

All I know is this little adventure is what I needed to re-juice, re-set and feel human again.

…i choose this…

  1. Ahhhh, what a heavenly escape! The combo is everything: the exploring, the physical exercise, the cushy room with a glass of wine after it all … I wrote a post once about a 6-day solo trip to Nicaragua, and I remember making a big deal that the bathroom countertop was ALL MINE! Haha. Sometimes we just need to get away and have both time and place be 100% our own. Enjoy!

    1. Ah cool. What a great choice. I want to go back and do some more bike riding. I found a really nice single track my limited skills can handle. Do you remember what camp ground? Or did you all do dispersed camping?

  2. Going away once a year on a little solo trip is what’s needed for my well being too. Spending time alone is a reliable way to get to know yourself. I’m glad you had a great time 😊😊 Aiva

  3. Sounds like an amazing little adventure Pam. We all need some me-time don’t we and what a place you have found to spend it in. The little town seems perfect and cycling and hiking in such amazing wilderness just tops it off.

  4. I can so relate, being an introvert myself. Recharging is important, especially when our “back at home lives” require we not be. Looks like a great trip! The more dirt the better! 🙂

  5. Alone time is soooooo absolutely necessary! Some of us had a little too much unwanted-alone time during quarantine away from our loved ones, but when you do need it, you’re right in listening to yourself and taking it.
I’m always amazed by your ability to dig up some incredibly lovely, out-of-the-ordinary places near home.
Hope the end of your alone time was as awesome as the beginning.
Cheers to you, my dear friend!

    1. Have you been able to see your fam yet? I sure hope so – I know how close you are to them. And your other friend too I hope? The weekend was sooo much fun. I am actually exhausted today. Gettin-old Jules ;-).

      1. I don’t ever believe you’re getting old, Pam! Happy to know you had a great time! Keep telling us about it! 😉
Enjoying family and friends on this side of the ocean, with my whole heart! (moved back in southern France and will be looking for a job in Marseille after my summer 10-day hike in the Alps)

        Enjoy the day! xoxoxo

  6. I totally agree about just needing alone time sometimes. It’s been hard to get these days, although my husband is pretty darn good about giving me space when I need it. Looks like you had an excellent recharge and those ankles are so perfectly filthy! 🙂

  7. I can totally relate to needing that alone time. I enjoy exploring by myself with camera in hand. In the mid-90s when we were searching for a home in Co. Springs, we stayed at a friends place in the town of Divide and enjoyed spending time in that part of CO. We actually took the kids tubing on the Tarryal Creek (I think that’s what it’s called – just a little west of Lake George). That water sure is cold but beautiful.

      1. Due to the current state of Covid, we’re not exploring but staying hunkered down on private property in northern WI. It’s lake front with a pontoon boat, canoe, kayak, and SUP at our disposal. No complaints. We are however getting in little day trips here and there and staying social distanced which is pretty easy to do around this part of the country.

        1. I bet it’s beautiful! Yeah, all the stuff we have been doing has allowed us to practice some good SD. Except we did fly to Oregon. I bought a home up there. Flying was not too bad. The train at DIA was a little weird. 😳

  8. I love it how different we all are! I was recently designated a classic extrovert by the Enneagram system. I really don’t like being alone and will run from it, although I pride myself as counting on one hand a few solid friends and do not like or abide superficiality. I will not seek out brainless distraction simply to not be alone. When I used to feel lonely, I would take myself to the beach, sit there, breathe in the fresh salt air, and do some yoga. I would come away reinvigorated, refreshed, and connected to God and Nature.

I hope you were refreshed after your great get-away.

      1. I’m back. Yes the blog was hidden for a bit during the darkest moments of the lockdowns. I didn’t know if I would blog again but I came back. . Just needed to process some stuff and adjust to the new situation. I guess it’s not too far from what you did as I went on a bit of a retreat, except I didn’t get to go anywhere ha ha 😉

        1. I am glad you are back on your feet lady. I am soooo far behind on reading others posts. Work has been overwhelming the last few months. I hope you are doing alright now. This getaway was desperately needed. You have no idea. Lol.
