Lens-Artists Challenge #81 – Find Something Red

Posted by

Our photo challenge this week from the fabulous Patti at Pilot Fish, is to “find something red”. Like Patti, my eyes are drawn to bright colors – really any time of the year. Red always seems to be a standout.

In preparation for this post, I found an interesting take on the positive and negative traits of the color red from Empowered by Color.

Positive traits include: action, energy and speed, attention-getting, assertive and confident, energizing, stimulating, exciting, powerful, passionate, stimulating and driven, courageous and strong, spontaneous and determined.

Negative traits include: aggressive and domineering, over-bearing, tiring, angry and quick-tempered, ruthless, fearful and intolerant, rebellious and obstinate, resentful, violent and brutal.

I did my best to assign a few traits to my submissions below – Enjoy!! Feel free to chime in.

I recently took a long hike with a good friend – the environment was mostly snow white with hints of green and brown from the surrounding pine trees. As she walked ahead of me, her red backpack caught my eye. I’d say the red here exudes energy and speed, as well as, assertiveness and confidence.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is quite possibly one of my all-time favorite red objects to photograph. I must have hundreds of images of this iconic landmark – the one below is probably my favorite :-). The lighting was perfect that day. The word powerful comes to mind!

In Patagonia, the terrain is beautiful, but it generally does not include colors other than green, brown, tan, blue and beige. It’s nice to see this pop of red, orange and yellow, like these kayaks, in the middle of this stark environment! I feel excited and energized as I envision paddling around this beautiful bay.

I once rented a bike in San Antonio and rode along a portion of the world-famous riverwalk. I unexpectedly came across an unusual art installation hanging from one of the underpasses – I loved all the bright colors of the fish. A man was there playing the violin – it was such a wonderful experience. The acoustics were crazy good! I’d say this falls into the attention-getting and stimulating categories.

In Panama near Red Frog Beach, Isla Bastimentos, we went on a hike known for its poisonous (not to humans) red tree frogs. For some reason, we had the idea they would be huge and didn’t see even ONE – then realized they were the size of a nickel! Once we adjusted our expectations, we saw them everywhere and stepped lightly to make sure we didn’t accidentally crush one. They were so cool to see in person! Ideally, I think these critters would like to come across as ruthless, as well as, violent and brutal. However, I see courage and strength.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

  1. In these colourless days of winter, pops of colour are most welcome, especially red 🙂

Your photo of the Golden Gate Bridge is STUNNING!! This is one I’d most certainly have blown-up and framed on the wall!!

    1. Thanks! I have never tried to frame an iPhone photo – I am too lazy to get to the camera shop to print them out. I’ll make it a goal to print this one and see what it looks like! Thanks for the vote of confidence!

  2. Loved your post this week Pam. That little red frog ❤️❤️! Your photo of the GG with those purple flowers is wonderful and the fish look like they’re swimming on air. Super!!

  3. Pam. how cute isn’t that little red frog??? Maybe a prince!!!! That image of the Gold Gate … made to become a postcard. Those fishes … strange how we notice things with a camera in our hand, we have a different world than those that don’t have a camera – at least I think so. Brillant gallery, Pam.

    1. Thank you! Yes, he could have been a prince, though I can promise my lips would never touch that frog. LOL. I agree on the camera comment – I get in trouble every now and then for “not being in the moment”, but I actually am in the moment and am capturing a memory that may be lost forever without the image!

  4. Well done on the post overall because you gave us great photos – a mini lesson on takes on red – and then encouragement – like seeing the red frogs with courage –
And a top photo for me here is that art fish installation – yeah baby! Just the photo of it shows interest but all the more enjoyable it must have been to be underneath it and near it for the experience – one of my favorite kinds of art!

    1. Thanks AB! I truly was not expecting to come across anything like the fish. I feel the same way about red – in fact, I don’t think I have one lick of red anywhere in our house. With the exception of some shoes and a few bits of clothing!

  5. This is a great post. I scrolled thru when it came out and liked it, but just now I took the time to really read and see. Great writing and I love the little froggie but the SF shot, wow. It is truly exceptional. Thanks for sharing.
