Airstream Campers + Redwoods + California = Heaven!

If you are looking for something unique to do in 2020, I’d seriously consider this experience! I’ve been meaning to post about this for a while – better late than never I suppose.

So, the 3 days before I backpacked the Lost Coast in Northern California in 2018, a group of us planted ourselves at a place call the AutoCamp on the Russian River in Sonoma County, California in the town of Guerneville. It’s roughly 90 minutes from San Francisco, so not too far from a major airport. The name doesn’t exactly sound like a super cool place to stay does it? It almost sounds like a gathering place for rednecks right?

It is essentially a luxury Airstream campground! In addition to always wanting a retro van, I drool over Airstreams. This was our chance to check one out without having to tow the trailer. Wish I was there right now, sleeping on one of their memory foam mattresses – best sleep of my life. If an Airstream doesn’t interest you, or the price point is out of range, they do have super nice glamping tents available as well.

The Airstreams themselves are de-luxe with high-end boutique hotel bedding, linens, and towels, as well as, spa-inspired bathrooms with walk-in showers (not available in tents). If you are in a tent, the bathroom facilities are a far cry from the standard camping showers over-flowing with foot fungus! (See below)

The camper we had was perfect for two people, though there is an option to make another bed from the sofa if you have kids or a third wheel friend.

The attention to detail was present everywhere, from the insides of the Airstreams themselves, to the lighting on the property, the check-in area, wine tastings in the evening, fire pits, hammocks, and the delicious coffee in the morning!

What did we do for fun while we were there? Most nights, we grabbed a bottle of wine and hung out by our campfire – it was dreamy. Since the Russian River is close by, we rented kayaks and paddled down the river for a few miles, rode bikes to town and around the neighborhood behind the camp and also played golf in a redwood forest at the Northwood Golf Club.

There are some gorgeous redwood hikes in nearby Armstrong Woods State Park and the beaches of Jenner are seemingly just around the corner. We went in April so there were seals having babies on the beach (LOVE). Wineries are in the area, but we kept to our adventuring roots and spent our time outdoors. Every day was a new experience.

The town of Guerneville where the AutoCamp lives is a funky little Northern California town, with some pretty good restaurants! I found a great summary of what else you can stumble upon via this link 48 Hours in Guernville, California.

It looks like they have new locations in Yosemite and Cape Cod – both would be incredible! They are also in Santa Barbara, California. I highly recommend you check this place out – you won’t regret it!

….i choose this….

  1. O my goodness, just look at this incredibly amazing place. There are two things I love more than anything – redwoods and Airstream campers. Knowing that there is a place where these two are combined, just makes me so happy. California’s Lost Coast has long been on my travel wish list, fingers crossed I’ll get there one day. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 😀 Aiva ❤️

    1. Ahh, thank you! You would absolutely love it!! The Lost Coast is pretty incredible too. I haven’t done a full post on the LC, but maybe I will! It was such a cool experience, but then again, anything in a tent is cool to me. Have a wonderful day Aiva!! Thanks for your visit – I always enjoy them :-).

    1. AB! You know I would rather be in a tent, however, these are really nice. I know Sean liked it better – haha. They did a really nice job with the interiors of these places. It’s such a beautiful area too. Have a wonderful day!

  2. That looks like such a great experience, but I’m not sure I could actually stay in one of the Airstreams. I’m afraid that it would negatively affect my view of our darling little 12-foot travel trailer, which we love, but would probably look a whole lot different after a few nights in a luxury Airstream. Any faults it has would suddenly be glaring. Maybe we’d better opt for the glamping tents. Does it seem well-placed and convenient for doing winery tours?

    1. HAHA! I totally understand. The glamping tents are really nice too – one of our friends stayed in one – I FAILED to get a good snap of the inside. It does seem well placed for winery tours. That wasn’t on our agenda, but I do believe they are nearby. You could always call em and ask.

  3. What a fabulous place! Such a great idea and sounds like you had the best time. Those Airstreams are so cool aren’t they? Can’t imagine how big a car you would need to tow one though as they’re enormous.

  4. My friends and better half just nixed my dream of the Milkweed Inn in Michigan (cabin in middle of nowhere Michigan run by Michelin star chef), but I have a feeling they would definitely go for this type of camping. I’ll have to check out Cape Cod. Great article and photos – thanks!

      1. I am in rude good health thanks, although still have a load of follow up hospital appointments which is a pain as I am more or less grounded. I should be in Sri Lanka now! Still, it won’t be forever.

  5. There is nothing like Airstream living. Having traveled from coast to coast to coast for one year (2017 -2018), I put on 44,000 miles and realized that tiny house living on wheels was so captivating that I’ve been going out every summer ever since.

  6. Always thought I would just spend the day driving around to see the redwoods. Your idea of renting an in place airstream is fabulous. When I finally get to see the redwoods, I will definitely spend a few nights there. Thanks.
