The year leading up to Double Nickels and slightly beyond

Posted by

I can’t believe it, next year I turn 55. Where has the time gone? Just yesterday I moved to Colorado….Really 19 years ago, but it seems like JUST YESTERDAY. JUST yesterday I was a 10 year old kid moving to Dallas with my family. Time is flying by. Sometimes I’m bothered by it, other times I just embrace it and look forward to the new chapter.

“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.”

David Bowie

Regardless of how old I am, my life list never stops growing. I think that’s a good thing – always seeking adventure, knowledge…enriching life experiences. Nearly every year, I make a list of 50 to 100 things I want to accomplish/experience over the coming 12 months. I’m a doer, a list maker and slightly Type A, I can’t help it!

When flying to Houston for work this past Monday, I pulled out my notebook and got to writing everything I want to do starting on 12/1, ending a few months past my 55th birthday. It feels weird to write that number down and think it is actually going to be my age VERY soon!

Usually I wait until the new year, but was motivated so why not start the process now?

Truth be told, in the past, I have never gone back to see what I ACTUALLY accomplished….this post will be my tracking mechanism for the next 12 months. I want to see how good I am about reaching my goals. Or am I just full of hot air?

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”

Zig Ziglar

Here goes…hoping someone out there will be inspired to create their own list and get after it!! Looks like the next 12 months are going to be a tad bit busy – I wouldn’t have it any other way.

One thing I have to say, we just bought a comfy sofa, so enjoying the sofa WILL be competing with my list of things to do!

  1. Hi Pam,
That’s a huge list. You will need a big vacation after you accomplish all that! 😃
BTW we did a blog post about Tulum you might find eye-opening. Tulum was very eye-opening for us. We prefer Isa Mujeres or Isla Holbox. Can you also see if you can now sign up for our blog? We have had several new sign-ups so it should work for you now if not, please let us know?
Best wishes on your list and that double nickel coming up!

  2. Wow – now THAT’s a list! For some reason I’ve never made a wish list. I just grab onto things as they arise. I do think your way can be more intentional and motivational, pushing a person to do at least a few things not quite in the comfort zone. Maybe I’ll try a teeny tiny list some year!

    1. There is a risk of me getting into a rut by doing the same thing over and over….this at least helps prevent that. Though it may be tough this year with the new sofa…I swear I just want to sit in it ALL day every day!! I think you should SUP down one of the bayous – then I can live vicariously through you 😄 .

  3. Oh my goodness, that is quite a list. And you also work! However, it is so good to have goals, I hope you accomplish all of your tasks… I will read about them on your blog! 🙂 BTW, I ordered greeting cards last night with a bunch of my photos on them. Can’t wait to see how they look 🙂 ❤

  4. I never make lists, not even shopping ones which usually results in me forgetting half of what I went to the supermarket for but good luck to you with yours. There is nothing there that looks unachievable.

As well as being interesting, this post has also been educational as I had to look up Type A, SUP, TED and 14er not to mention “double nickel” itself. Being British we don’t have a special word for our equivalent coin, it is just a 5p. I think I prefer nickel as a term!

  5. OMG! We are so alike it is frightening! Even sharing the same birthday number next year! I used to find birthdays incredibly depressing and would beat myself up about how dull my life was in the last 12 months and how little I achieved. So about 30 years ago I sat down and wrote out about 7 goals I wanted to achieve for that year and I stuck it on my fridge. My friends thought this was hilarious and the first thing they would do when they arrived at my house was go to the fridge and check out my progress against each of the goals. It was a fabulous way to keep me honest. This has since evolved into a much more detailed, organised and TIMED plan which I review weekly. This all probably sounds incredibly over-organised, but it so lifted my productivity and sense of achievement. It is exciting to continually challenge yourself and I am always trying to make sure I don’t get too comfortable and am reaching for new goals. Happy planning and bring on a BIG 2020! Melx

    1. I love it Mel!! No, not over organized – it’s great!!! I do need to print this out and hang it in my office. I swear if don’t do this, I get into a rut. No one wants that! I feel like life is meant to be lived and for me, this is through experiences – especially since I don’t have kids! Yay to 2020 goals and to achieving them!!!

  6. The 50’s are awesome, and 2020 looks amazing for you! My only two tips :-). I follow ColoradoChelsea on here, and she day hikes all over CO, and post the trip reports and pictures. Might be worth checking out. My old college roommate owns a mountain biking retreat in Whitefish Montana (www.whitefishbikeretreat.com). It’s awesome because it’s really cool place, BORDERS Glacier National Park, and Cricket is amazing! 🙂 Also worth checking out! Good luck!

    1. The 50’s have been AWESOME. For so many reasons!! I follow chelsea too, will definitely reference her page for hiking ideas. Whitefish is one of my favorite places. I’ll check it out! Glacier is sooo amazing. Jeez. We are lucky to have that jewel in the states 🙂

  7. Great list, I was thinking about setting out a reading goals list for next year but otherwise I tend to go with the flow, maybe I will follow your lead and set up some goals, I like the idea of working with a charity, I have one in mind. Writing more blog posts is always a good goal so that would be another or maybe more specifically writing creative responses to the things I choose to address on the blog would be a better way of thinking about blog posts for me. More camping if I could work less and camp more I would be a happy person but that is not really a goal, that is my life, go camping at every opportunity.

    1. I’m with you on the camping! Or really, just being outside. Btw, I’ve tried to get back to your blog through the link attached to your name and it’s says the blog no longer exists? Did ya change the name or move to another platform? I have to have goals or I feel like I just randomly wander…maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Haha.

  8. That is quite the list! Renting a houseboat on Lake Powell was something I’ve wanted to do, but since we’ve camped at her shores numerous times and power boated, I’ll take it. I’m still working on our travel plans for 2020 but know WI, MI, and MN will definitely be included.

    1. Oh, I’m SURE you have a jam packed year of fun ahead!! Yeah, the houseboat thing…sean loves them. Should be a kick! I can’t wait to read about your adventures. I have not spent too much time in any of those states.

  9. So I counted. That’s 181 things to do and then several of those things are multiday vacations. Dude, get busy. I’m running a race with two bloggers I’ve never met in January. Excited and nervous. I’m much more friendly and comfortable in writing. Other than taht, I’ve never met a blogger. If you’re ever in gettysburg…

    1. I know, I know, I always over extend! It will be so much fun to meet Laurie in person. I think she’ll be exactly like she is on line :-). And yes, when in Gettysburg….we can go for a run! For some reason I don’t fully enjoy sitting down in front of people at dinner. I don’t know why. Id rather be doing something.

  10. Madre mia! (that’s how we say in Spain, OMG) That is some list! I wish you a very happy 55th, I’m getting ready for my 65th! (next summer, Gemini here)…but I agree, time is going much too fast in these days…I read somewhere that there is a physical answer to that reference vibrations of the universe or some other rubbish theory like that but they may have something there. I don’t mind ageing, I agree with Bowie, but it’s just time…time is going too fast and before I can get to savour the flavour, it is gone! Anyways, best of luck with your plans and I sincerely hope you fulfill each and every one of them! I think I’m going to make a list as well, but I will maybe only put one thing…Cheers!

    1. Your comments made me smile Francisco! It is a rather large list, I don’t think I ever accomplish everything on it, but I do try like hell. Your list would surely have more than one item on it – lol. All I can say is that I try to make every day count (not always realistic, but I try). Cheers to a great week for you!

    1. It is going to be a busy year. I’m curious how many things I’ll actually knock off. Looking forward to a great year and yes, LOTS of living to do! Hope you all are having a great holiday season so far!

  11. Oh, I love this!!! You have an amazing list, Pam! I need to start thinking about mine. I’m a fan of double digits. There’s just something about them that says things are going to be amazing! 🙂

  12. I almost hate to confess that I’ve gone the opposite direction as I’ve gotten older… more content to do less planning and just see what happens. But I’ll admit to some broader goals.
BTW — In Japanese, the number 5 (五) is pronounces “go”… Speed Racer’s car number. So… Go! Go!

  13. I love these kind of goal lists. You have some really interesting things on yours and I’m particularly impressed at how ambitious you are considering you’re still working!!

I’ve been keeping a goal list for at least 3 years but unfortunately I lost my New Things list when my computer was stolen. If memory serves me correctly, I had over 300 items on it of which about 140 of them had been done so far this year.

I admit to feeling a little lost right now. Losing my computer, cameras, and entire photo library has had the effect of making me re-evaluate what I do and why. So far I have no direction and I’m just taking the time to let the universe guide me.

I hope you get to do everything on that list – and more! I’m excited and a little awestruck about the year 2020 (how did I get so old so fast!). Let’s kick ass.

    1. Good morning! Well, don’t be too impressed, I make the lists every year but don’t always complete them! It is generally a compass for me during the year so I don’t do the same old stuff.

WOW!! you have been rolling along with your list – that is fantastic!!! I am not surprised at all.

I am still sick for you for losing your stuff. I is sooo hard to start all over. Have you replaced the computer or get a new camera?

  14. Pam, great list and although there is a lot to accomplish here, I guess these are all “doable”, since it sounds like you have a lot of energy. My husband loves a good list, but I tend to just go with the flow. Although I do think that having a list and being able to check your progress and achievements is certainly a very good idea. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2020!!!

    1. Ok cool Rebecca! – the 50’s have been some of the best – not sure how you feel about it! I am trying to be thoughtful about how I spend my time. I figure life is about living – my version of that is by experiencing NEW things not just doing the same thing over and over again. Thanks for taking the time to read – it’s a long list. lol.
